Simulating Human Systems: Challenges in Mathematics and ICT

Today, in most industries, new products (for instance cars or aircrafts) are first designed and tested computer simulations. In this process the manufacturers increase a lot their productivity and their possibilities to innovate.

Would it be possible to proceed similarly when deciding about urban planning, transport networks, anti-crime policies or financial crises prevention?

The recent progress in data collection and management, the increase of computing power with the development of computer grids in particular, offer new possibilities. For instance large scale simulations accurately predicted the diffusion of the H1N1 virus, other simulations include the all the daily movements of a population of a country to help to design the transport system, the dynamics of financial bubbles can be modelled through the actions of a large number of players…
